THE TERRASTAR

Navistar’s International TerraStar class 4/5 is a real truck, with its commercial-duty MaxxForce diesel and what Navistar calls "the largest, roomiest cab available."

The all-new 300-hp, 6.4-litre MaxxForce 7 V-8 engine delivers 660 lb ft of torque and sports a compacted-graphite-iron (CGI) block which offers strength with less weight. It uses Navistar’s ‘Advanced EGR’ emissions technology, which has the advantage of needing no frame space for a DEF tank as with SCR engines, easing body and equipment mounting. It’s matched with the Allison 1000 transmission

Built on a strong commercial-duty platform, Navistar claims the TerraStar features best-in-class visibility — 28% more than the market leader. Given its 107-in. BBC and a 44-ft turning radius, it should offer good maneuverability.

Its real-truck cab is very roomy, allowing three adults to fit comfortably in the front seat. Optional extended cab and crew-cab configurations will also be offered.

Serviceability is aided by a commercial style tilt-away hood that offers unobstructed access to the engine compartment. The truck also features the International Diamond Logic multiplex electrical system, which eases body integration and helps deliver a number of customizable features such as automated pre-trip inspections, headlights on with wipers, interlocks, programmable switches, and more depending on the application.

The TerraStar will be available with a 4×2 drivetrain later this year, while a 4×4 version is planned for 2011.
