Eaton's new generation VORAD safety system offers new capabilities in a smaller package.
TAMPA, Fla. — Eaton Corporation is introducing a new generation of its VORAD safety system, offering additional capabilities in a smaller package.
The new VORAD VS-400 will be rolled out in April, with full-scale production slated for June. It will replace the current VORAD EVT-300 system. Customers will be able to choose from a variety of functions now offered through the VORAD system, including the Blindspotter side sensor and SmartCruise adaptive cruise control.
Customers can subscribe to Eatons Fleet Resource Manager to extract real-time data such as following distances and hard braking applications. Accident reconstruction capabilities will remain a staple of the new generation VORAD system.
Our goal is to take VORAD, already one of the most effective driver safety systems in trucking, to a whole new level by making it an integral part of overall fleet safety, said Phil Warmbier, marketing manager for Eatons Vehicle Solution Business Unit. As part of the Fleet Resource Manager safety package, VORAD now becomes even more effective by giving fleets the ability to monitor, benchmark and proactively improve driver and fleet safety.
The radar itself has been redesigned to provide improved performance. The 77 GHz radar is 70% lighter and 60% smaller than its predecessor, Don Alles of Roadranger announced at the Technology and Maintenance Council meetings in Tampa Monday. Installation has been simplified as the number of wires has been reduced from 18 to four.
The new VORAD system also features a new driver interface unit, which can be programmed to record the performance of up to four different drivers in slipseat operations. Fleet managers can produce reports that enable them to make real-time improvements to their fleet operations. The basic VORAD package can be factory-installed by OEMs, or purchased as a retrofit system.
Because no two fleets are exactly alike, we see no reason why any one of our customers should have to settle on one safety system, said Warmbier. Everyone now has the option to go with a standard VORAD system, or tie into the ultimate safety package that we have now made available with our Fleet Resource Manager mobile resource management solution.
While pricing has yet to be determined, Alles said the entire package will be comparable to current offerings.
