CALGARY, Alta. — TransCores GlobalWave satellite-based trailer tracking devices have received the highest level of certification available for tracking dangerous goods shipments.

The system received the Class 1 Division 1 rating under the Underwriters Laboratories 913 Intrinsically Safe Apparatus and Associated Apparatus Certification program. The category covers loads that have ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids such as gasoline and ethanol fuel.

The new safety designation was announced at the Go-Expo oil and gas exposition in Calgary.

TransCore plans to expand GlobalWaves market reach to include cargo such as hazardous materials and munitions. The new designation ensures any spark or thermal effect created by the tracking system is incapable of igniting any flammable or combustible cargo such as oil or gas.

“By demonstrating conformance with internationally recognized haz-mat standards through stringent testing by a recognized third-party certification organization, GlobalWave trailer tracking products can further expand into this critical part of commercial transportation,” said David Roscoe, TransCore’s vice-president for satellite communications research and development. “This qualification is crucial for providing the maximum level of safety and performance that carriers and shippers require.”
