Volvo and Mack integrating Geotab telematics

by Today's Trucking

Volvo and Mack are both partnering with Geotab to integrate factory-fit telematics packages into their trucks, offering support for fleet management, diagnostics, and compliance.

The Geotab Drive + Fleet for Volvo Trucks is described as a cloud-based solution that does not require additional hardware. Mack’s system is branded as Geotab Connected by Mack.

Each system is compatible with the OEMs’ respective 2015-and-newer trucks running proprietary engines.

The tools offers fleet managers access to activity reports, driver performance reports, delivery schedules, and vehicle locations. Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) come in the form of Geotab Drive, launched for the brands in 2019, capturing hours of service and vehicle inspection reports.

The cloud-based platform also offers more reliable ELD data capturing capabilities than wifi or Bluetooth systems, Volvo says.

The factory-installed device sends engine and location data to the cloud, generating automatic duty status logs, Mack says. No pairing process is needed, so the vehicle will continue to record data regardless of the connection status of the mobile unit.

Wireless interference will not affect the reporting, the company adds.
