The all-new Western Star 5700XE wowed the crowdsThe all-new Western Star 5700XE highway tractor was launched at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. last week.

It features new aerodynamic innovations tested and proven in the Daimler Trucks North America wind tunnel in Portland, Ore. It also sports a four-piece aerodynamic bumper, new hood, projector beam headlights, a drag-neutral visor, and integrated LED turn signal and marker lights. Optimized roof and chassis fairing packages provide increased aerodynamics and further reduce drag.

The 5700XE can be spec’d with Detroit DD13 , DD15, or DD16 engines with power ranging from 350 to 600 hp and up to 2050 lb ft of torque. The DD15 is standard, and no Cummins engines are on offer. The integrated Detroit Powertrain can be chosen, which features the new downsped DD15 engine rated at 400 hp and 1750 lb ft of torque, a direct-drive Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission with Intelligent Powertrain Management, and matched Detroit front and rear axles.

Standard transmission is the automated DT12, while options are limited to several manual Eaton models with 9, 10, 13, 15, or 18 speeds. Rear-axle options include single and tandem Detroits rated up to 46,000 lb, or a 40,000-lb Meritor. The only rear suspension in the databook is the company’s own Airliner, and up front the Hendrickson AirTek 12,500-lb air suspension is optional.

The 5700XE will be built at Daimler’s Cleveland, N.C. manufacturing plant, with production beginning in the second quarter of 2015.

All Western Star trucks are backed by a 24-hour Customer Assistance Center and the more than 340 service centers in North America.
