ZF Industries offers heavy truck transmission

VERNON HILLS, Ill. — The latest transmission from ZF Industries is a system that provides even more control over heavy trucks weighing up to 250 tons.

The ZF-TC Tronic — which has reportedly already gained its first customer with Liebherr cranes — combines the features of the proven automated 12-speed ZF-AS Tronic with a WSK torque converter unit, resulting in a transmission system that allows for smoother starting of extremely heavy vehicles with electronically controlled diesel (EDC) engines.

In addition to its integrated primary retarder design, automatic shift capability, and electronic monitoring system to prevent incorrect gearshifts, the ZF-TC Tronic also permits a torque input of approximately 2,000 ft-lbs.

The system takes excessive load off the driveline due to its shock-free operation, and it provides a higher fuel-efficiency than powershift automatic transmissions thanks to the available 12 forward speeds.
