Cash-poor Parks Canada takes a pass on roadwork

EDMONTON, Alta. — Parks Canada is so short of money it says it can’t rebuild the 21 crumbling highways that pass through the country’s 16 national parks.

Several of the green spaces exist along the Trans-Canada Highway and are thus major through routes for truckers pulling across the country.

Alan Latourelle, chief operating officer of Parks Canada, says Ottawa’s priority after Sept. 11 is public security, and the federal department will have to delay implementing measures to keep the parks unspoiled.
