Flip Customs at commercial crossings: Pettigrew (November 06, 2001)

WINDSOR, Ont. — Canada and the U.S. Customs should examine a flip-flop of locations to force truckers and travellers to clear security before crossing the border, rather than after.

That’s the message coming from Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of International Trade. He adds the revised procedure would both boost security while also speeding trade.

In the months following the terrorist attacks on the U.S. many have worried aloud that international crossings would be high-risk targets for future action. Advocates of a so-called reversed Customs system say this would protect bridges and tunnels from terrorist attacks, allowing for security sweeps before any vehicle was permitted to cross the line.
