Trucking firm, director fined over diesel spill
Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment has fined a transport company and its director after they failed to notify the ministry of a diesel spill.
Able Staffing Solutions was fined $25,000 in addition to a victim surcharge fine of $6,250, while director Mohamed A. Hashi was fined $5,000 in addition to a victim surcharge fine of $1,250.
The Ministry said outlined in a release that on Feb. 19, 2022, a truck owned by the company was involved in a collision near Thunder Bay. Both saddle fuel tanks were ruptured, spilling between 400 and 800 liters of diesel fuel.
Responding police notified the ministry of the spill, and the involved truck driver told police he had reported the incident to Hashi.
The ministry says no remedial actions were taken to clean up the sill until June 2022, once the ministry had commenced an investigation.
“Neither Mr. Hashi nor any other representative of the company followed up with the insurer to ensure the required remediation work was being completed, nor were any details about the remediation work provided to the ministry as required,” the ministry said in its release.
