MTO, OPP stop truck carrying contraband cigarettes

The Ministry of Transportation and the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Highway Safety Division intercepted a truck traveling with 3.6 million illegal cigarettes last week.

The truck was stopped by the Ministry of Transportation on Aug. 29 at 10:45 p.m. on Highway 407 in Burlington, Ont.

The OPP was called in to help investigate and discovered 3.6 million unmarked cigarettes. The driver, 33-year-old Ioannis Fthenos of Stoney Creek, Ont., was charged and will appear in court Nov. 18. The charges have not been proven in court.
