The Canadian government is investing $590,223 to advance mobile hydrogen distribution technology in B.C. The funding, part of a broader $9.14 million investment announced by Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of energy and natural resources, is aimed to support innovation in Canada’s clean hydrogen sector.

“Canadian businesses have the ambition and drive to provide clean energy solutions and become the supplier of choice in a net-zero world. This is especially true when we see the progress being made throughout the hydrogen value chain and across the regions to advance Canada’s growing hydrogen sector,” Wilkinson said in a news release. “Investments like the ones announced today are a great example of what the hydrogen opportunity can do for Canadians — helping create jobs, grow the economy, and contribute to a sustainable future.”

This project, led by Hydrogen in Motion and supported by the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence under Alberta Innovates, focuses on the development of mobile hydrogen distribution systems. Before extensive hydrogen pipelines are established, delivering hydrogen to refueling stations will be essential to support the growing fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

In addition to the investment in mobile distribution, the government is allocating $1.09 million to Ayrton Energy in Alberta. This project, also supported by the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, aims to assess the feasibility of transporting hydrogen in conventional tanks, trucks and pipelines at ambient temperature and pressure.

These investments are part of a broader strategy to position Canada as a global hydrogen production and distribution leader. Some other projects receiving funding include $1.25 million awarded to the University of British Columbia for developing a pilot plant focused on low-cost, low-emission hydrogen production and $900,000 to Enbridge Gas in Ontario for the Markham Virtual Hydrogen Hybrid Demonstration Project, aimed at producing renewable hydrogen using wind and solar assets.
