GREENVILLE, S.C. — Michelin celebrated the sale of its one millionth X One wide-base single tire last week.

The company launched its X One wide-base single at the Great American Trucking Show in 2000 and has expanded the line steadily ever since.

“This significant milestone – along with the breadth of wide single products we offer – proves that the X One tire is now a mainstream solution for fleet customers,” said Francois Corbin, chief operating officer, Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “Our goal all along has been to provide products that bring value to trucking fleets and owner/operators. The X One tire has delivered that value and will continue to deliver on that promise.”

Michelin figures its customers have collectively saved 63 million gallons of fuel since the X One was launched in 2000, eliminating 639,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. The company says a 1,000 truck fleet can reduce its CO2 emissions by 17,0000 metric tonnes per year by converting to singles, equivalent to removing 3,400 cars from the road.

The tires also trim about 700 lbs of weight per truck, Michelin claims.

The tire is also still gaining in popularity. Michelin said sales of its X One single tires are up 50% year-to-date compared to last year.

“As more trucks return to our North American highways, fleet managers are turning to the Michelin X One tire to help save fuel and add to their bottom line,” said Ted Becker, vice-president of marketing, Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “We’re finding these sales are coming from both existing customers who are already realizing the benefits of wide single tires, as well as new customers who are making the switch for the first time.”

Truck News will have a full report on the milestone in the November issue.
