AAA online map not being offered in Atlantic Canada (September 19, 2002)

ST. STEPHEN, N.B. — The Canadian Automobile Association in Atlantic Canada has told the American Automobile Association it will not bring AAA’s online Triptik map service to Atlantic Canada members.

As its first choice, the online road map sends Bangor-to-Saint John travellers through Houlton, Me., and Woodstock, N.B. It will direct them through Calais, Me., and St. Stephen, N.B., and cut nearly 160 km and one hour from their travel, only if travellers ask for this route.

Gary Howard, the CAA’s marketing director for Atlantic Canada, has been assured by Jan Coyne, the AAA’s director of geographic information systems, that she is taking this issue seriously.

The AAA’s map-drawing Web page is programmed to look for the course that makes the most use of interstate and Trans-Canada highways, Howard says. But this isn’t necessarily the best choice for Saint Johners.

CAA Atlantic and the New England AAA chapters both recommend the Calais route to club members who come to their office to pick up a printed Triptik, he said.

Howard says ideally, when a member wants to travel from New England to Saint John, a message should pop up on the site asking the user to choose between the interstate route through Houlton or the faster pathway through Calais and St. Stephen.
