Alberta driver championships held in Calgary

CALGARY, Alta. — The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) hosted its annual Truck Roadeo June 14 in preparation for the national championships in Winnipeg this fall.

More than 85 drivers took part in the competition, which included obstacles such as the Loading Dock, Serpentine, Cloverleaf, Right Angle Turn, Diminishing Clearance and Offset Alley.

This year’s provincial winners included: Robert Labelle, Cascade Carriers, step van; Keith Franklin, Canadian Freightways, straight truck; Calvin Briggs, Grimshaw Trucking, single axle tractor and trailer; Rick Limoges, Grimshaw Trucking, single axle tractor and tandem trailer; Daniel Black, Cascade Carriers, tandem tractor and tandem trailer; Bill Mihalcheon, Canadian Freightways, b-train.

Also taking home some hardware were: Larry Baker, City of Calgary, rookie-of-the-year and Labelle who was also named grand champion. Cascade Carriers won the team award, which goes to the team with the highest average score.

Each of the winners will compete at the national championships Sept. 6 in Manitoba.
