Alberta licence mill hunt expanded

CALGARY, (Feb. 24, 2005) — Calgary police are widening their probe of training schools that issue fake Class 1 licences to unqualified and potentially dangerous drivers.

This past weekend police raided the Delta Driving School on suspicion that untrained truck drivers were being put behind the wheel of heavy trucks for fees of up to $2,500. The school’s operator Jaswant Singh and a medical doctor, Gurdip Bhullar, have been charged with forgery of documents and breach of public office. Several other suspects — including instructors, independent examiners and another doctor — have been identified.

Tips from the public resulting from the Delta School case have helped police expand their investigation to several other schools that may be involved in similar practices, Det. Dave Rock told Canadian Press.

Nearly 200 licences issued by the Delta are currently under investigation by police. It’s alleged the school issued fake documents and fast-tracked Class 1 licences for out-of-province trainees, who then easily exchanged them for legitimate licences back home.

Police say more arrests are expected soon.
