CALGARY, Alta. — Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein may not be the best of friends, but they’ll be all smiles today as they announce joint ring road funding in Calgary.

Both Calgary and Edmonton will receive a boost to their ring road projects thanks to a $150 million contribution from the feds to be shared by the two cities.

“I’m looking forward to the announcement and even more than that I’m looking forward to the movement of dirt,” Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier tells local media. “I’d like to see it as soon as possible, because of the dire need.”

The province is also expected to kick in up to $142 million towards the projects, as part of its $5.5 billion commitment to infrastructure in the latest budget.

The federal funding will be part of the Strategic Highways Infrastructure Program.
