Alberta’s best ready to represent at Nationals

RED DEER, Alta. — When all was said and done, Paul Mills of Canada Safeway bested a number of other Alberta truckers and was named the Grand Champion at the province’s Professional Truck Driving Championships.

The trucker showdown, put on by the Alberta Motor Transport Association, took place in Red Deer last week. Drivers from across the province demonstrated their skills in driving and road safety knowledge, in six different categories.

By having the top score across all categories, Paul Mills earned the Grand Champion title. Scott Gee of Sokil Express Lines had the top score among first time competitors and earned the Rookie of the Year award.

Winning the Team Award, for the highest combined score, were the drivers representing Canadian Freightways out of Calgary, which included Lonnie Wilton, Rick Ross, Patrick Thorne, Dustin Slawson, and Randy Smith.

Step Van Division: Randy Smith – Canadian Freightways

Straight Truck Division: Keith Franklin – Canadian Freightways

Single-Single Division: Darren Tychkowsky – Fedex Freight

Single-Tandem Division: Dale Fryklund – City of Calgary

Tandem-Tandem Division: Paul Mills – Canada Safeway

B-Train Division: Steven Calhoun – Canadian Freightways
