Alta extends cargo securement enforcement deadline
CALGARY, (Aug. 5, 2005) — Alberta’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation has extended the “educational” period for the Cargo Securement Regulation AR1/2005 and the NSC Standard 10 Cargo Securement to end October 1, 2005. Enforcement had originally been scheduled to end July 1, 2005.
Therefore, says the Alberta Motor Transport Association, until October 1, they will continue with the educational approach.
With respect to the new regulation, warnings (no prosecution) would be issued to the carrier. At the discretion of the officer, verbal instruction and, or written warnings should be used to raise awareness of breach of the new rules to drivers and carriers.
Where a “significant” safety risk is identified a charge under Section 65 of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation may well be considered.
