Amherst scale gets weigh ‘n motion

AMHERST, N.S. — Truck inspections in this part of Nova Scotia are going to get a lot quicker now that new weigh-in-motion technology on Trans-Canada is almost ready.

The system, the fourth in the province, is installed on the highway ahead of the Amherst weight station and will go live in December.

Size and weight information is sensed while the vehicle is on the road and the information is sent to scalehouse staff in advance of the vehicle’s approach.

The weigh in motion system will beef up enforcement in the area. The Amherst scale in particular was the subject of much criticism in a provincial audit on truck enforcement earlier this year.

It will help inspectors screen trucks before calling them into the coop and allow them to focus mostly on problem carriers and overweight trucks.

Officers will continue to randomly pull in trucks as well.

The $1 million price tag being split between the province and Ottawa.
