APTA gives thumbs up to Welsford bypass plan

SAINT JOHN, (Feb. 2, 2005) — The director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association is welcoming a plan that would create a new highway bypass at Welsford for commercial trucks.

Ralph Boyd told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that the bypass would be good for both the community and truckers who haul from Saint John to Fredericton on a daily basis.

The narrow and twisting Hwy. 7 has been described as a death trap by area residents, and to complicate matters commercial trucks are required to stop at a railway crossing in the centre of the town, creating more than a few near-accidents.

Just north of the proposed bypass, a permanent Department of Transportation counter indicates that the route sees an annual average of about 3,800 vehicles per day pass through.
