Atlantic minister takes issue with cell phones
HALIFAX, N.S. — Walter Noel, minister of government services and lands, wants provincial ministers to push for a ban on cell phone use while driving.
Ninety-five per cent of Noel’s fellow Newfoundlanders believe using cell phones while driving is a serious problem, and the minister would like the other provinces to follow suit in banning their use.
Nearly 30 countries throughout the world have implemented cell phone bans, certain local jurisdictions and the State of New York have set restrictions to date. Many are contemplating action and while it would be desirable to have consistency across the country with respect to this matter, Noel adds the Newfoundland government is prepared to act on its own.
He has asked this issue be brought before federal minister, David Collenette, at the meeting in Winnipeg on Sept. 20.
