Attention Truckers in BC: Get the chains ready.

If you’re driving through B.C this winter, make sure you have your tire chains ready to go — especially on the Coquihalla Highway #5 at Box Canyon (south/west of Great Bear Snowshed).

The area is known for unpredictable weather and close to a number of avalanche zones. The chain-up zone becomes congested quickly, and in an effort to improve safety, all commercial vehicle operators that do not immediately exit their vehicle and start attaching chains will be turned around and potentially towed at the owner’s expense.

So no parking — aside from the time to install your chains.

The bulletin, released by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, also notes that drivers who are not able to demonstrate competency in installing chains could also be turned around or towed.

You can get a heads up on chain-up zones by following @DriveBC on Twitter or visiting their website.

(Thanks to The North American Truckers Guild for passing this on.)
