Average Canadian Diesel Cost Lowest Since February

LONDON, ON and WASHINGTON, D.C. — Average Canadian prices for fuel are continuing with their recent downward trend with diesel hitting its lowest level in months while in the U.S. it’s at its lowest since October 2009.

New figures released by the petroleum information services provider The Kent Group shows a drop of $0.009 from last week to a national average of $1.092 per liter, also marking the fifth straight weekly decline. 

Compared to the same time a year ago the average cost of trucking’s main fuel is down $0.204 per liter.

Regionally, prices averaged $1.068 in the Atlantic Provinces, $1.13 in Quebec, $1.077 in Ontario and $1.099 in the Western Provinces.

Meantime, the average cost of regular grade gasoline is down for only the second straight week, but shed $0.038 from a week ago for a national average of $1.184 per liter.

Compared to this time in 2014 the cost is $0.134 less.

In the four main regions of Canada it ranges from a low of $1.17 in Ontario to $1.237 in Quebec.

Meantime, in the U.S. there has been a more dramatic drop in fuel prices, with diesel hitting its lowest level in nearly six years, according to the country’s Energy Department.

The national average tumbled last week another US$0.059 from the week before to US$2.723 per gallon.

The latest decline is the largest week-over-week drop since late January while the fuel is down US$0.191 in this latest string of nine weekly drops. Also, compared to the same time a year ago the average U.S. cost of diesel is down $1.135 per gallon.

As for regular grade gasoline, it fell US$0.057 over the past week to a national average of $2.745 per gallon, down US$0.794 cents from a year earlier and its lowest level since around mid-May.
