Average Diesel Cost Down for Second Straight Week

The average cost of diesel fuel in Canada has moved lower for the second consecutive week, according to a weekly report from the petroleum information services provider The Kent Group Ltd

It’s down $0.005 cent from last week to $1.13 per liter, following a drop of $0.002 cent the week before.

Compared to this week a year ago the price is $0.226 per liter less.

This week in small markets the average diesel cost is $1.144 while it’s $1.124 in large markets.

Prices in the Atlantic part of the country averaged $1.142, Quebec was $1.19, Ontario at $1.125, while the Western Canada average came in at $1.119.

Meantime, the average cost of regular grade gasoline moved down $0.008 cent over the past week to a national average of $1.182 per liter.

This follows increases the previous three weeks when it picked up $0.06.

When compared to this week in 2014 the price is down $0.199.

Likewise in the U.S., diesel also continued its recent downward trend, with the national average falling for the second consecutive week to US$2.884 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Department.

The US$0.025 cent drop this week follows a US$0.005 decline the week before following six straight weekly hikes totaling US$0.16.

Compared to the same time a year ago the average price of diesel there is down US$1.008 per gallon from a year earlier.

Regular grade gasoline was unchanged over the past week at US$2.78 per gallon, the first time it has failed to increase in nearly two months.

During the previous seven weeks it increased US$0.372 per gallon but remains US$0.894 less than the same time a year earlier.

Following the release of the figures, the U.S. Energy Department announced its forecast for the average price of diesel this year to be unchanged from its estimate a month ago at US$2.88 per gallon, but lowered its 2016 projection by $0.09 cents to US$3.03 per gallon.
