Average Diesel Cost Lowest in Nearly Three Months

LONDON, ON and WASHINGTON, D.C. — The average Canadian price of diesel continues moving lower, hitting its lowest level this week since just after mid-April.

New figures released by the petroleum information services provider The Kent Group show it’s at $1.109 per liter, down $0.008 from last week.

This is also the third straight weekly drop and has shed $0.015 during this time.

Compared to this week in 2014, the average cost of diesel is $0.215 less per liter.

Regionally, prices range from a high of $1.163 in Quebec to a low of $1.09 in the Atlantic region. Average prices are $1.096 in Ontario and $1.107 in the Western provinces.

This happened as the average cost of regular grade gasoline increased $0.014 this week to $1.235 per liter.

This is the second straight week hike and is just one-tenth of a cent shy of equaling the highest price so far this year on June 16 and is in sharp contrast to the low so far in 2015 of $0.913 per liter hit the third week of January.

Compared to this week last year the price of regular grade gasoline is still $0.103 less.

Meantime, in the U.S. gasoline and diesel this week also heading in opposite directions, according to the country’s Energy Department.

Trucking’s main fuel fell for the seventh consecutive week, slipping US$0.018 from last week to an average of US$2.814 per gallon

This is the longest streak of declines so far this year in the country and is US$1.08 less than compared to the same time last year.

In contrast, the average U.S. cost of regular grade gasoline picked up US$0.041 over the past week for a national average of US$2.834 per gallon, but remains US$0.801 less than the same time last year.

Much of the reason for the overall increase was a whopping US$0.292 jump in the average price in the U.S. West Coast region, due mainly to refinery maintenance issues, while the average cost of diesel there still managed to post a US$0.059 per gallon drop over the past week.
