GOLDEN, B.C. — The province of B.C. has asked the federal government to kick in 50 per cent of the cost of upgrading a 26-kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada from Golden to Yoho National Park.

B.C. has asked Ottawa for $335 million for its share of the project, half of which would be handed over this year with the remainder to be fit into next year’s budget.

The Golden RCMP detachment has reported the deadly stretch of highway has seen 109 injury-accident collisions and four fatalities since January, 1996.

“It’s one of our highest collision areas,” Sgt. Al Strickland tells local media.
