VICTORIA, B.C. — Citing the need to raise more revenue to improve the province’s highways, the B.C. Liberals implemented a 3.5 per cent fuel tax increase last week.

Drivers in the Lower Mainland now pay among the highest fuel taxes in the country.

Chilliwack-Kent MLA Barry Penner says some of the money raised through the new fuel tax will go towards improving the Trans-Canada Hwy.

Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo announced the new fuel tax in last week’s throne speech.

“(Funding for road improvements) will be secured for the future through dedicated funding from fuel tax revenue that ensures those investments are made,” Campagnolo says.
