B.C. Delta Mayor wants trucks off trucking route

VANCOUVER, (April 15, 2005) — Delta Mayor Lois Jackson is throwing her weight behind a proposal to ban transport trucks from River Road.

The plan — which has been floated to TransLink by the Corporation of Delta several times over the last few years — would take trucks off River Road between Centre Street to the Delta/Surrey boundary and force them to use an alternative route.

Jackson was quoted by local media as saying truck volume on the road “has gotten out of control.” Jackson wants the trucks re-routed along Nordel Way as a short-term solution to the problem, saying it’s up to the provincial and federal governments to fix it.

The B. C Trucking Association is fighting the move, saying that River Road has historically been a truck route, resulting in industrial parks and other businesses depending on truck.

The BCTA says under the request, an additional 4,000 trucks per day would be required to access the Nordel Way weigh scale, which is currently having difficulty accommodating the current volume of trucks.
