BC hikes allowable truck wheelbase in advance of Olympics

VICTORIA — B.C.’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) branch has introduced a new policy that makes long wheelbases on tractors more consistent with the U.S. and other Canadian jurisdictions.

The ministry says it’s "formalizing (its) approach" in anticipation of an increase in commercial traffic as equipment enters BC for the 2010 Olympics.

The new policy is consistent with other provinces that allow a tractor wheelbase to exceed 6.2 metres, provided that wheelbase of the semi-trailer is reduced accordingly.

The overall length of the vehicle combination cannot exceed the current maximum length of 23 metres for conventional truck tractor-semi-trailer combinations.

B.C’s limit was intended to reduce "off-tracking" by tractor-trailers since, in making a turn, a tractor with a longer wheelbase will take up more space.
