B.C. team set for national driving competition

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — More than 50 of B.C.’s best truckers squared off at the 2008 British Columbia Professional Truck Driving Championships for a spot on the provincial team.

The event was held on July 5 in Abbotsford, B.C. Winners from each of the six classes will participate in the National Professional Truck Driving Championships, which are being held this September in Ottawa.

To be eligible to compete, each driver must be free of preventable accidents for the 12 months prior to the competition.

This year’s Grand Champion was Rob Balan of Canadian Freightways. Balan placed first in the Tandem-Tandem class.

Joining Balan as B.C. representatives for the national championships will be: Julius Swecera of Reimer Express Lines, Step-Van class; Hans Wettstein of Canadian Freightways, Straight Truck class; Evan Hirst of Canadian Freightways, Single-Single class; Dean Grant of Agrifoods International Cooperative, Single-Tandem class; and Adam Besse of Canadian Freightways, B-Train class.

The Rookie of the Year award went to Brian Meredith of Van Kam Freightways, and the Safety Award was won by Roland Lapierre of Reimer Express Lines.
