Beef Up Your Cargo Security This Holiday Weekend, Warns FreightWatch

AUSTIN, TX. — Cargo thieves don’t take Labour Day Weekend off, FreightWatch International warned this week.

In fact, Labour Day Weekend 2012 recorded thefts at a rate of 4.4 per day, according to FreightWatch data. That’s a 63 percent increase in cargo theft when compared to the annual average.

Organized theft rings know that holiday weekends means more shipments left unattended for extended periods of time.

Both in-transit and warehouse operations will be heavily targeted, FreightWatch warned. That means having your security people ensure protocols are up-to-date and in-line with industry best practices.

They also advise double-checking that receiver’s hours of operation for the holiday weekend are consistent with scheduled delivery times to help mitigate criminal’s attempts to steal cargo at rest

“If available, covert tracking and active monitoring of high value shipments is highly recommended recommended as it has proven to be the most effective protocol to mitigate in-transit theft,” FreightWatch said.
