ALBANY, N.Y. — You have to have convex mirrors on the front of your big trucks in New York City, starting now.

Governor Mario Cuomo signed legislation Monday that requires all trucks 26,000 lb and over to have convex mirrors — or "crossover mirrors," — usually mounted in front of the front fenders supposedly to help drivers eliminating blind spots.

In his own support, Cuomo’s statistics show that in New York City, 204 pedestrians were killed and another 4,698 injured by trucks between 1994 and 2003.

Response to the new law – which has been debated more than a few times over the years — from the New York State Motor Truck Association (NTSMTA) was, as you might have predicted, one of skepticism.

Executive Director Kendra Adams says the mirrors required lose their effectiveness when the truck is in motion, which, of course, is almost always.

Crossover mirrors, she adds, won’t do much to help drivers spot pedestrians who step out in front of their truck.

Plus, at about $100 bucks each, they’re expensive for large fleets to equip.

A better solution, she says, is for the city to install large convex mirrors on poles around the city, allowing cars and trucks alike to increase their vision.

As it stands, the law only applies to trucks registered in New York State.
