Bison wins coveted truckload safety award

WINNIPEG — One of Canada’s most respected fleets has been awarded the grand prize at the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) highly coveted 2006 National Fleet Safety Awards for the second straight year.

Bison is considered one of the safest fleets in NA

The Alexandria, Va.-based TCA recognized Winnipeg-based Bison Transport companies for its commitment to safety and accident reduction. Bison (which finished first in the 100 Million Miles category) was the grand winner for all carriers operating over 25 million miles annually, while Don Hummer Trucking of Oxford, Iowa won the grand prize for less than 25 million miles annually. Bison won the top prize for the same category in 2006.

Two others Canadian carriers also placed high. Transport Robert of Bouchervile, Que. took first place in Division V (50-99.99 million miles), and MacKinnon Transport of Guelph, Ont. came in second in Division IV (25-49.99 million miles).

The National Fleet Safety Division Awards are determined by accident frequency per million miles driven in each of six mileage divisions. The top three division winners were selected and have been audited by an independent expert to verify their accident frequency numbers. Accident ratios per million miles for all division winners ranged from zero to .43, while the truckload segment of the industry averaged .54 accidents per million miles traveled.

Both Bison Transport was selected for its overall safety programs, both on and off-highway, including employee driver/independent contractor selection procedures, training, supervision, accident investigation, inspection and maintenance of equipment, and outside activities including general highway safety.
