MARKHAM, Ont. — Canadian Trucking Alliance chief David Bradley yesterday urged the Heavy-Duty Distributor Council (HDDC) to get behind its push for government incentives for early adopters of environmentally-friendly trucks.
Bradley spoke to about 150 HDDC delegates about the CTAs enviroTruck program, which would see tax incentives for carriers that accelerate their purchase of new smog-free truck engines and other environmentally-friendly devices such as APUs.
By tackling both smog and reducing GHGs, there would be a huge environmental payback for society and an accelerated penetration of the new 2007-10 engines into the marketplace, he said. Right now with the higher purchase price of the new trucks, combined with the fuel efficiency penalties associated with the new engine and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel standards, people arent keen to invest in new equipment and sales have dropped off accordingly.
Bradley also told delegates he remains bullish on the trucking industry despite challenges such as a continuing escalation of the Canadian dollars value.
There is no reason for permanent, long-term rate softness in trucking; all operating costs labour, fuel and equipment – are going up and need to be covered; and the driver shortage is only get worse, he pointed out. No other mode can beat the service that trucking provides.
