BREAKING NEWS: Quebec to ban heavy trucks from 135 bridges

MONTREAL — About 135 concrete bridges, overpasses, and ramps similar in structure to the Concorde Blvd. bridge that collapsed and killed five people last year will be restricted to heavier loaded trucks.

According to the Montreal Gazette, the Quebec Ministry of Transport is imposing weight limits on the structures until it can ensure they are safe for overweight loads.

On Tuesday, the MTQ closed two lanes on two overpasses on the busy Felix Leclerc Autoroute in Quebec City and imposed a load limit of only three tones.

The government will release a list of the bridges and overpasses this afternoon. So far, it’s known that eight of the 135 structures are on the island of Montreal and 19 are in Quebec City.

Originally, officials refused to name the structures, but after a meeting with the Quebec Trucking Association yesterday, the department agreed to make the list public.

The QTA, which is warning the ban would force carriers to pass along extra transport costs, demanded it receive advance notice of any closures or load limitations, reports the Gazette.

Transport Department spokesperson Jacques Gagnon stressed that the general public should not be concerned with the announcement.

The news comes in the middle of the Johnson Commission inquiry, which is investigating the overpass collapse in Montreal last November.

Most experts at the hearings assert that shear cracks indicated distress inside the support abutment of the de la Concorde Blvd. overpass.
