Canadians comfortable with private fleets transporting cannabis: Ipsos

MONTREAL, QC – A majority of Canadians surveyed say they would be comfortable with private or for-hire fleets being responsible for transporting cannabis once it becomes legal in Canada later this year.

There are still looming questions about enforcement, growing, storage, and transportation of the drug that will need to be cleared up in time for the summer deadline set by the federal government for legalization.

Ipsos Public Affairs released the results of a survey of Canadians it conducted on behalf security firm GardaWorld.

Of the 1,007 people the polling firm spoke to, 66% said they were comfortable with private fleets securely transporting cannabis to warehouses for storage, or to distribution centers.

While the results of the survey showed Canadians want to ensure monitoring, storage, and transportation are all handled securely, respondents were comfortable with the responsibility being in the hands of private businesses as opposed to police-escorted or government-controlled fleets.

Christian Paradis, senior vice president of GardaWorld said the industry is calling for the necessary legislative changes to make outsourcing possible or easier across Canada.

While the legalization of cannabis falls under federal jurisdiction, the provinces are responsible for regulating and enforcing distribution and sales.
