VANCOUVER, B.C. — While the government has been unable to take the U.S. to task over softwood lumber duties, Canada’s biggest softwood exporter is ready to play hardball.

Canfor has taken another step towards suing the U.S. for $250 million after filing a statement of claim, which will be used to back up its lawsuit announced last November.

The company says the duties violate NAFTA rules against arbitrary, unfair and discriminatory treatment and that the duties favor U.S. lumber producers.

David Emerson, Canfor president, says the U.S. is in violation of NAFTA and World Trade Organization polcies.
