Cashing on in speed limiters

MILTON, Ont. — Obligatory speed limiters in Ontario are discouraging American carriers from entering the province.

And that means more business for you. Why not partner with an American fleet so you can pick up its freight at the border and haul it into the province?

That advice came from Ray Haight, one of Canada’s better-known truck-fleet consultants. He was speaking at the TransCore Link Logistics Users Conference in Milton, Ont., when he made the remarks.

Haight’s a former driver who went on to help run the vastly successful MacKinnon Transport company and he has also maintained a leadership role with the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA).

He knows what he’s talking about.

He told the audience that MacKinnon has established a partnership with an American carrier, and is doing an additional 25 loads a day across the border as a result.

“More American carriers aren’t going to cross the border, so there’ll be more opportunities for cross-border loads,” he said.

Cashing in on speed limiters was only one of the tips for success that Haight offered the crowd.

He also said now’s a great time to hire top-notch drivers and enhance your training, so you’ll have the best personnel in your stable when the economy recovers; and it’s also a good opportunity to have banks extend your credit; if, that is, you’re not in debt.

“Ask for credit when you don’t need it. And get to know your banker,” Haight advised.

Whatever you do, act now, “procrastination is the thief of time,” he said.
