TORONTO, Ont. — Chris Harris, senior safety representative for Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada, will head an industry career path roundtable as chairman.

Harris was named chairman following a meeting of industry stakeholders in December, at which the need for a career path in trucking was the topic of the day. Following that meeting, the group decided to appoint a chairman to help oversee efforts to establish a career path in trucking.

Harris is a trucking industry veteran who worked for TNT before joining Old Republic in 2001. Both his father and grandfather owned trucking companies.

The groups efforts to establish a career path in trucking has been lauded by Diane Finley, who was Federal Minister of Human Resources and Social Development at the time of the first meeting.

Congratulations to all the participants of the roundtable for discussing the trucking industry career path, Finley said. I have had great pleasure meeting a number of people from the transportation industry. I am also impressed by the initiative taken by the Apprenticeship Industry Committee for commercial drivers in the province of Ontario.

Carriers participating in the career path initiative include: MacKinnon Transport; L.E. Walker Transport; Erg Group of Companies; Kriska; the TST Truckload Express; and White Oak Transport.

The career path roundtable is important to the industry and those who earn their living in it, said Harris. It is equally important to those considering the trucking industry as a career. I am happy to invest the time and energy into this venture.
