KINGSTON, Ont. — Eastern Ontario AM dial mainstay 1380 CKLC has officially dumped its all-sports format after only a year without music.
The new format, dubbed “all-time favorites” by company officials, happened abruptly at 3 p.m. on Aug. 27, when the station broke into Elvis Presley’s A Little Less Conversation and continued with music.
The Kingston station, known as The Team, takes its feed from CHUM Toronto, which has also scrapped its sports talk format in favor of music programming. Stations in Winnipeg, Kitchener and Halifax that are dependent on the Toronto programming also switched formats yesterday afternoon.
“When the choice was dead air or another format, we took the other format,” says Gary Perrin, CKLC’s general manager.
The new format wasn’t announced beforehand because the announcers and hosts in Toronto who lost their jobs weren’t informed until yesterday afternoon, he adds.
