MONTREAL, — Responding to rising customer demand, Canadian National has announced an increase in intermodal train capacity across its transcontinental Canadian network.

CN says it has increased its IMX intermodal train capacity for overseas containers moving between the Port of Vancouver and Montreal and Toronto by more than 20 percent, while boosting capacity for domestic container moves between Toronto and Montreal and major Western Canada centres by more than 10 percent. In all, the new service plan, which became effective this week, will allow CN to accommodate an additional 125,000 intermodal units per year across Canada, an increase of 15 percent.

CN offers fourth morning service between Toronto and Vancouver, as well as third morning service to Edmonton and Calgary from Toronto, and second morning service between Toronto and Winnipeg.

“Coupled with CN’s ample rail network capacity, these IMX benefits position us to accommodate rising demand for our intermodal services — driven by surging Asian imports and strong domestic markets — without the need for costly new investments in track or terminal handling capabilities,” James Foote, CN’s executive vice-president of sales and marketing, said in a press release.
