Canadian National Railway (CN) has reached a new tentative four-year collective agreement with Unifor, the union representing approximately 3,000 of its employees in Canada, including those in mechanical, clerical, and intermodal fields.

CN said in a statement on Dec. 10 that no details of this tentative agreement will be released publicly until it is ratified. The current collective agreement with Unifor expires on Dec. 31, 2024.

This agreement follows a series of labor disruptions in Canada’s railway industry earlier this year. In August, CN and CPKC railway workers issued a 72-hour strike notice after negotiations with their respective unions, which led to halted shipments of certain goods in preparation for the potential disruption.

After workers at CN and CPKC initiated a work stoppage on Aug. 22 — following almost a year of unsuccessful negotiations — Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) imposed binding arbitration, ordering companies to return to work the next day.
