HALIFAX, N.S. — Clarke Inc. saw its overall profits drop in the second quarter and first half of 2008, but its principal freight subsidiaries experienced growth, the company reported.

Overall, Clarke reported a Q2 net income of $12.4 million, down from $28.1 million over the same period last year. However, Clarke Transport and Clarke Road Transport “performed well despite a challenging operating environment characterized by rising fuel costs,” the company claimed.

Clarke’s freight transportation segment recorded an EBITDA of $6.6 million for the quarter, an increase of $1.5 million compared to the second quarter of 07. Clarke said its intermodal transportation operations were mostly responsible for the improvement.

The company said it will continue to focus on “efficiency improvements” in its freight transportationi operations.
