HALIFAX, N.S. — Clarke Inc. has reported a first quarter loss of $2.1 million.

The Q1 result compares to a net income of $12.1 million during the same period of 2007. On the transportation side, Clarke Transport and Clarke Road Transport reported an EBITDA of $0.8 million for the quarter, a decrease from $1 million the year before.

The company blamed rising fuel costs and weather-related service issues with rail providers for the decline.

The company said it anticipates further efficiency improvements in its freight transportation segment, which it said should carry the segment to a better overall performance in 2008 than in 2007.
