COMPETITION WATCH: Con-Way announces senior management changes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Con-Way Transportation Services, Inc., a subsidiary of CNF Inc., has announced four senior management changes.

John G. Labrie, currently president and chief executive officer of Con-Way Western Express in Buena Park, Ca., has been appointed executive vice president of operations for Con-Way Transportation Services. In his new position Labrie will have direct management and planning responsibilities for all corporate level maintenance, construction, strategic planning, network operations support, fleet resources, decision technology, safety and regulatory compliance. Four Con-Way operating companies will also report to Labrie; Con-Way NOW, Con-Way Logistics, Con-Way Air and the company’s newest business unit, Con-Way Truckload, which will begin operations January 18.

Labrie joined Con-Way in 1990 as an account manager with Con-Way Central Express (CCX). In 1991 he was promoted to account executive. He continued to advance through several increasingly responsible positions being promoted to director of linehaul for CCX in 1995. From 1998 to 2002 he served as vice president of operations for Con-Way Western Express. In 2002 he was promoted to president and chief executive officer of the company. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Central Michigan University and holds an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. He will work out of the Con-Way corporate offices in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Kevin M. Hartman, currently vice president of operations for Ann Arbor- based Con-Way Central Express, will replace Labrie as president and chief executive officer of Con-Way Western Express. Hartman will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of the company’s financial, operating and service performance.

Hartman joined the CNF organization in 1976 as a clerical assistant while still in college. Upon graduation in 1978, he entered the company’s management trainee program. In 1983 he joined Con-Way as a service center manager for Con-Way Eastern Express (CEX) in Rochester, N.Y. He was promoted to a region manager for Con-Way Eastern in 1985 with responsibilities for 25 service centers. From 1987 until 1990 he was director of linehaul for CEX. In 1990 he was appointed manager of safety for Con-Way Central Express. In 1993 he was promoted to director of personnel for CCX followed by his promotion to vice president of operations in 1997. Hartman earned a bachelor’s degree in transportation from Niagara University. He will be relocating to the Buena Park, Ca. area.

Bruce H. Moss, currently vice president of sales for Con-Way Central Express, will replace Kevin Hartman as vice president of operations for CCX. He will be responsible for the day-to-day management of CCX’s 25-state and nine Canadian province service center network, including the freight flow department and direction of system-wide operations.

Moss joined the Con-Way organization in 1990 as a service center manager for Con-Way Southern Express in Hickory, N.C. Later that same year he was named director of personnel and safety. In 1995 he was promoted to region manager. He was promoted to vice president of sales for CCX in 2000. He will continue to be based at the general offices of CCX in Ann Arbor. Moss holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina.

Mike S. Bare, currently vice president and general manager of Con-Way Logistics, will replace Bruce Moss as vice president of sales for Con-Way Central Express. Bare will be the senior executive responsible for the day- to-day management, sales policy and procedures, staffing, sales performance, pricing strategies and long-term direction of all CCX sales operations.

Bare joined Con-Way in 1984 as an account executive for Con-Way Central Express in Akron, Ohio. Within a year he was named service center manager for the Sharon/Newcastle, Pa. CCX service center. In 1988 he returned to Akron as service center manager. In 1989 he was promoted to service center manager in Des Plaines, Ill. From 1992 to 1993 he managed the CCX Buffalo, N.Y. terminal. In 1993 he moved back to Des Plaines as a region manager. He was promoted to vice president and general manager of Con-Way Logistics in 1998. Bare holds a degree in transportation from the University of Akron. He will work out of the CCX general offices in Ann Arbor.
