NEW ULM, Minn. — J&R Schugel Trucking has become the 100th partner to join the EPA’s Smartway Partnership Program.

The program recognizes carriers and shippers that have taken measures to reduce their energy consumption. It encourages shippers to use fleets that have taken steps to become more efficient, while the carriers themselves typically realize savings in fuel use.

Canadian carriers are also able to participate in the program. One member carrier Triple S Trucking claims it has saved US$94,000 after a monetary investment of just $16,000. It adopted in-cab heaters, a speed reduction program and an idle-reduction training program to meet its targets.
