Convoy for a Cure keeps rolling

TORONTO — What started out as a small, all female convey to raise support for breast cancer continues to blossom.

In 2008, Rachèle Champagne was heading west along highway 401 with her friend Jennifer Duval and colleague Shelly Fry Hoernicke when she got the idea for an all female convoy.

And she thought if she was going to get this thing started, she might as well do some good and make it into a fundraiser.

The first annual Convoy for the Cure was so successful that the very next year three other Convoys New Brunswick, Alberta, and Texas hit the road.

A second Convoy was added in Ontario in 2010, and this year Champagne and company are not only donating the funds to breast cancer, but lung, colon and prostate cancer as well.

2010 was also the year that men were allowed to partake.

"I met a fellow truck driver who’s wife had passed away from breast cancer," Champagne writes on the CFAC website. "He shared his disappointment for not being able to participate in our convoy being an all female convoy. It was then that I decided to have a support convoy for the men."

This year’s starting points will be from the 730 Cardinal Truck Stop in Cardinal ON (HWY 401 exit 730) heading East ending at the 5th Wheel in Cornwall ON (HWY 401 exit 792). The other start point will be from the Flying J in Dorion QC (HWY 540 exit 3) heading West on 401 ending at the 5 Wheel in Cornwall, too.

Shania Twin, a tribute to Shania Twain, will also be on hand to lend a little song and dance to this year’s event.
