CTA requests enviroTruck leniency

TORONTO — The Canadian Truck Alliance is pushing for weight and length exemptions for environmental truck add-ons in an effort to speed up industry implementation.

At a presentation to the National Task Force on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions in Toronto, the CTA stressed the importance for all provincial governments to act swiftly on regulations that would allow weight and length considerations for key components of CTA’s enviroTruck.

“The adoption of provincial regulations to allow technologies associated with CTA’s enviroTruck will assist the Canadian trucking industry in remaining competitive and will have significant positive impacts on the environment,” says CTA’s Geoff Wood, vice-president of Operations and Safety.

Specifically, CTA is asking for: a 1,000 lb exemption from gross vehicle weights for APU’s and new engine technology; that wide based tires be permitted at 9,000 kg per axle Ontario east and 8,500 kg Manitoba west to allow parity with duals on drive axles; the ability for carriers to incorporate more fuel efficient boat tails on their trailer fleets without dimension penalties; additional weight exemptions be explored for trailer skirts and other aerodynamic option; and length and weight considerations be given for moose bumpers.
