CTHRC program offers subsidies to employers that hire trucker grads
TORONTO — The Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) launched a Youth Employment Strategy (YES) program to help the trucking industry hire more young people.
Through the CTHRC, employers hiring youth (19-30 years of age) that meet the requirements could be eligible to receive up to one third of their employees’ wages back from the council.
In 2003-2004, almost 30 individuals across Canada took part in this program, and CTHRC says many were retained by the companies that they worked for after the program ended.
“This new two year program is now open to employers who are interested in hiring CTHRC certified drivers,” said Linda Gauthier, executive director of the Council. “By offering subsidies, employers will be more likely to bring in new employees, from drivers to safety managers, that they might otherwise not have been able to hire.”
New to the subsidy program this time around is the inclusion of Earning Your Wheels (EYW), the CTHRC’s entry-level driver training program as the post-secondary requirement. Any EYW graduate from an accredited CTHRC facility now satisfies this educational requirement.
