OTTAWA, Ont. — The Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) is hosting its first ever Essential Skills conference in Calgary Sept. 9-10, 2004.

The conference will explore the evolution of essential skills and explain why they are an important learning and retention tool for the trucking industry.

"The conference will, among other things, present the business case for essential skill training within our industry," said Linda Gauthier, Executive Director for the Council. "In the two days, attendees will learn how to implement Essential Skills practices into their businesses immediately to get a more efficient and skilled employee base."

Essential skills are a group of skills that are deemed necessary to be successful in any occupation, explained Gauthier. They enable people to learn technical skills and to competently perform job tasks. Essentials skills are an integral part of the national occupational standards for various occupations in the trucking industry which were created by industry, for industry, she said.

Conference highlights include invited keynote speakers such as Scott Murray, Director General, Social and Institutional Statistics, Statistics Canada and Kelly Lendsay, Executive Director, Aboriginal Human Resource Development Council. There will also be sessions hosted by four of the companies who piloted Essential Skills tools customized for the industry. Sessions will include their feedback, best practices and lessons learned from the essential skills initiative.

"The Council invites anyone with a vested interest in helping to maintain and increase the success of the trucking industry to attend this industry-first conference," said Gauthier. "This is a key event for the sharing of industry best practices."
